The moon goes through eight distinct phases during its 29.5-day lunar cycle:
- đ New Moon - The moon is between the Earth and Sun (0% illumination)
- đ Waxing Crescent - A thin crescent of light appears (1-49% illumination)
- đ First Quarter - Half of the moon is illuminated (50% illumination)
- đ Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit, growing (51-99% illumination)
- đ Full Moon - The entire face is illuminated (100% illumination)
- đ Waning Gibbous - More than half is lit, shrinking (99-51% illumination)
- đ Last Quarter - Half of the moon is illuminated (50% illumination)
- đ Waning Crescent - A thin crescent remains (49-1% illumination)
